A comedian and social media personality is facing serious backlash after claiming she delivered a cake with a vile message to the Capitol Hill office of newly sworn-in Sen. Darline Graham Nordone, whose brother had just died days earlier.
Elizabeth Booker Houston posted Tuesday on X that she had dropped off the cake following the sudden death of Sen. Lindsey Graham and Nordone’s subsequent appointment to complete his Senate term.
I just dropped this cake off at Lindsey Graham’s office,” Houston wrote. “Congratudolences, Darline! Your brother is burning in hell, and now, you’re working for the devil!”
The post included a photo of the cake, which showed a printed image of Graham smiling in a suit and tie. The cake was bordered in white frosting, decorated with blue icing roses in the corner and around the edges, and featured the word “CONGRATUDOLENCES!” across the top, blending the words “congratulations” and “condolences.”
As originally reported, some users online cheered the stunt. One person wrote, “You’re truly doing god’s work,” while another said, “Elizabeth, I love you. When I grow up I want to be just like you.”
But the response was far from universally positive. Many users condemned the stunt as cruel, trashy, and a reflection of how toxic political hatred has become.
One critic fired back, “You really need a different hobby if you were so invested in politics that this is what you resort to. Good thing I wasn’t there because you would’ve been wearing your cake.”
Another wrote, “It’s funny that you think anyone will see that cake other than the intern who throws it away. Complete waste of time and money,” adding a clown face emoji for good measure.
A third commenter put it bluntly: “Get a life. I wasn’t a fan of Lindsey, but this is ridiculous. Your hatred is rotting your brain.”
Lindsey Graham, 71, died Saturday night, stunning Washington and his home state of South Carolina. An autopsy performed the following day suggested he died from aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Graham had been one of the Senate’s most active members, with an appearance on “Meet the Press” even scheduled for that Sunday morning.
His office confirmed the final death certificate would not be completed until additional testing is finished. Nordone was subsequently appointed and sworn in to serve out the remainder of his term.
