Border Patrol Arrests 36 Illegal Alien Truckers in Arizona Sweep, Most Held Biden-Era Work Permits

A major immigration enforcement operation in Arizona has resulted in the arrest of dozens of illegal alien commercial truck drivers, dealing a significant blow to what officials describe as a growing public safety threat on American roads.

During the week of May 11 through 15, U.S. Border Patrol agents in the Yuma Sector conducted a sweep that netted 52 people in the country illegally. Of those, 36 were actively driving semi-trucks.

The Department of Homeland Security laid out the operation’s purpose clearly. As originally reported, “Operation Checkmate enhances public safety through enforcement of immigration statutes aimed at the detection and arrest of illegal aliens operating commercial motor vehicles.”

One striking detail from the DHS press release involves the states that issued commercial driver’s licenses to the individuals arrested. Of the 36 illegal alien truck drivers taken into custody, 29 carried CDLs issued by California, New York, Washington, and Virginia. Three had no driver’s license at all.

The nationalities of those arrested were also notable. Thirty of the 52 individuals came from India, with the remaining six from Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia.

Perhaps the most politically charged element of the operation involves how many of these individuals were able to work legally in the first place. According to DHS, most of the arrested individuals held Employment Authorization Documents obtained during the Biden administration, documents that are no longer considered valid.

The Trump administration has made enforcement in the trucking sector a specific priority. Among the policy tools used has been a rule requiring all CDL holders to demonstrate English proficiency, a requirement that has been leveraged to identify and remove illegal aliens operating commercial vehicles.

Acting Chief Patrol Agent of the Yuma Sector, Dustin W. Caudle, addressed the arrests directly. “Operation Checkmate reflects our commitment to safeguarding communities and roads from unlawfully present drivers who pose significant risks to public safety,” he said.

Caudle made clear the enforcement push is not slowing down. “My agents are on patrol every day to ensure we stop these individuals and prevent more deadly crashes from occurring on the road across the United States,” he added.

All 52 individuals arrested during the operation were processed in accordance with federal law and are set to be deported.
