Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger walked into a wall of hostility during a recent visit to Galax, Virginia. The Democratic governor was met with loud, sustained booing from a crowd of constituents who made their displeasure impossible to ignore.
This was not a handful of hecklers on the fringe. Video from the event shows a broad, vocal reaction sweeping across the crowd, with jeers dominating the scene as Spanberger pressed forward through the openly hostile reception. The footage spread rapidly online, with Republicans seizing on it as proof that the governor is facing serious resistance beyond Virginia’s Democratic population centers.
According to a report, former Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares was among the first to amplify the clip, posting it to X with a pointed message. “Governor Spanberger booed in Galax,” Miyares wrote. “Turns out when you break your campaign promise, attempt a Leftist power grab pushing an unconstitutional gerrymandering effort in order to silence rural Virginia voices, coupled with massive tax increases, it results in a frosty reception.”
The location itself tells part of the story. Galax sits in southwestern Virginia, a world away from the Democratic strongholds of Northern Virginia and Richmond. Spanberger won the 2025 gubernatorial race by positioning herself as a moderate Democrat focused on affordability and kitchen-table issues. That image has taken a hit.
Much of the anger traces back to a fierce redistricting battle. Spanberger supported an effort to change the state constitution and allow a new congressional map to be drawn mid-decade, despite having indicated during her campaign that she had no plans to pursue mid-decade redistricting. Republicans accused Democrats of engineering a map designed to gut GOP representation and diminish the political voice of rural communities like those in Galax.
The redistricting push ultimately collapsed. The Supreme Court of Virginia ruled that lawmakers had failed to meet the state constitution’s requirements in the process used to advance the amendment, effectively ending the effort. Miyares, a vocal opponent throughout, celebrated the ruling as a defense of the redistricting system Virginians had previously approved.
Spanberger argued that Virginia needed flexibility to respond to Republican redistricting moves in other states. Republicans countered that Democrats were simply using their control in Richmond to reshape congressional maps for pure partisan gain.
Taxes have only added fuel to the fire. Republicans have hammered the Democratic-controlled government over spending proposals and a two-year state budget reaching roughly $207 billion. Spanberger has pushed back against claims that she personally endorsed every Democratic tax proposal, pointing to measures her administration describes as relief, including changes to the standard deduction.
None of that appeared to carry much weight with the crowd in Galax. The booing said plenty on its own.
