The FBI quietly built an operation specifically designed to label Biden corruption evidence as Russian disinformation.
Newly declassified documents from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence reveal that the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, just one month after taking possession of Hunter Biden’s laptop in December 2019, informally assembled a group of analysts. Their job was to collect all derogatory information from confidential human sources related to Joseph Biden, Ukraine, Burisma, and Hunter Biden, and then systematically flag it as Russian disinformation. The operation was called Round River.
The timing matters. FBI agents already had the laptop in hand. Internal text messages show one agent explicitly stating he could not understand how anyone could conclude the laptop was Russian disinformation. Yet simultaneously, a separate internal group was constructing an operation built entirely on that premise.
As originally reported, the operation’s reach extended well beyond the bureau itself and into the halls of Congress. The declassified ODNI documents confirm the Foreign Influence Task Force provided what it called “defensive briefings” to congressional members who had obtained reporting connected to any aspect of the Ukraine narrative. Those briefings were then leaked to the media.
Among the lawmakers briefed and listed as potential Russian “conduits” by the FBI: Senators Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley, who appeared sixth and seventh on the bureau’s internal list. Representative Jim Jordan came in eighth. All three were Republican lawmakers who had been actively investigating Biden-Ukraine corruption. All three were treated by the FBI as instruments of foreign propaganda, by the same agency sitting on physical evidence that confirmed the Biden family’s Ukraine dealings were real.
Round River was not the only operation now drawing scrutiny. According to reporter Paul Sperry, FBI headquarters is withholding a 400-page Office of Professional Responsibility report on the earlier Crossfire Hurricane probe, along with roughly 7,000 pages of supporting documents. That report reportedly implicates CIA Director John Brennan and the Five Eyes intelligence alliance in the 2016 operation targeting Donald Trump. Five Eyes refers to the shared intelligence apparatus of the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Crossfire Hurricane was the FBI operation that pursued a Trump-Russia scandal. Operation Round River was the FBI operation that suppressed a Biden-Ukraine scandal. Both operations, according to the declassified record, served the same directional purpose.
The documents also show the FBI coordinated with technology companies to suppress information contradicting Democratic Party interests, opened criminal probes against a sitting president for dismissing its director, and briefed Republican investigators as foreign agents before leaking those briefings publicly.
The declassifications are ongoing. Each new document adds detail to a pattern that, taken together, describes a federal law enforcement agency that did not drift off course. It picked one.
