A left-wing comedian is drawing widespread condemnation after claiming she delivered a cake bearing a vicious message to the Capitol Hill office of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham just days after his death.
The comedian, Elizabeth Booker Houston, directed the stunt at Graham’s younger sister, Darline Graham Nordone, on the very day Nordone was sworn in to complete the remainder of her brother’s Senate term. Graham died at age 71 after what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness,” shocking lawmakers and political observers across Washington.
Houston announced the alleged delivery on X, posting a photograph of the cake alongside the message: “I just dropped this cake off at Lindsey Graham’s office. Congratudolences, Darline! Your brother is burning in hell, and now, you’re working for the devil!”
The cake itself featured white frosting around the edges, blue icing roses across the top, and a printed image of Graham smiling in a suit and tie. Above the photograph, the baker had written “CONGRATUDOLENCES!” in large blue letters, combining “congratulations” and “condolences” in an apparent mockery of the circumstances surrounding Nordone’s entry into the Senate.
As originally reported, the attack carried a particularly personal edge. Graham had helped raise Nordone after both of their parents died while the two were young. That history meant Nordone was not simply grieving a brother. She was mourning the man who had stepped in as her caretaker during childhood.
Houston did not provide independent confirmation that the office accepted the cake or that Nordone ever saw it, but she presented the delivery as complete and publicized it broadly to her followers.
Some supporters cheered the move. “You’re truly doing god’s work,” one person wrote. Another added, “Elizabeth, I love you. When I grow up I want to be just like you.” But those voices were quickly outnumbered by critics who called the stunt needlessly cruel.
“You really need a different hobby if you were so invested in politics that this is what you resort to,” one critic wrote, adding, “Good thing I wasn’t there because you would’ve been wearing your cake.” Another user dismissed the gesture entirely: “It’s funny that you think anyone will see that cake other than the intern who throws it away. Complete waste of time and money.”
A preliminary autopsy indicated Graham died from an aortic dissection caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. His office noted the official cause and manner of death would remain pending until toxicological and microscopic testing were finalized. Graham had been active in the Senate right up until his death and was scheduled to appear on NBC’s “Meet the Press” the morning after he passed.
Nordone was sworn in Tuesday to serve out the remainder of her brother’s vacant term. As one critic summed it up plainly: “Get a life. I wasn’t a fan of Lindsey, but this is ridiculous. Your hatred is rotting your brain.”
