A Democratic congressional candidate in Texas, Maureen Galindo, has sparked significant outrage following her social media remarks about turning a federal immigration detention site near San Antonio into an internment camp. Galindo, who is currently vying in the Democratic runoff for Texas’ 35th Congressional District, made these claims in a recent Instagram post.
Galindo’s Controversial Proposal
In her post, Galindo stated her intention to convert the Karnes ICE Detention Center into an internment camp for what she described as “American Zionists” and former ICE officers involved in human trafficking. She further characterized it as a castration processing center for pedophiles, which she implied would largely consist of those she tags as Zionists.
This announcement coincides with mounting criticism of her rhetoric, with various commentators labeling it antisemitic and conspiratorial. As the May 26 Democratic primary approaches, the backlash against her statements has intensified.
Accusations Against Opponent
Amid her campaign, Galindo has leveled accusations against her runoff opponent, Johnny Garcia, who previously served as a public information officer in Bexar County. She has implicated him in a human trafficking conspiracy linked to affluent individuals she categorizes as “billionaire Zionist Jews.” In a recent interview with Texas Public Radio, she went so far as to propose putting Garcia on trial for treason based on these allegations.
In addition to her personal attacks on Garcia, Galindo has been accused of perpetuating harmful stereotypes and conspiracy theories regarding Jewish individuals, particularly suggesting that a Jewish cabal exerts control over Hollywood, the media, and political officeholders. She maintains that her grievances are directed towards “Zionists” rather than Jewish people as a whole.
Response from Community Organizations
The San Antonio Jewish Federation has condemned Galindo’s rhetoric, emphasizing that it crosses a line that should not be crossed in civic discourse. The Federation’s statement highlighted the negative impact of spreading antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories, asserting that such divisive and hateful language has no place in public life.
Galindo’s comments have not only drawn backlash from community groups but have begun to alienate her within her own party. John Lira, a former primary opponent of Galindo, has publicly retracted his endorsement. Additionally, State Representative James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for Texas’ U.S. Senate race, expressed his disapproval, stating he would refrain from campaigning with Galindo if she secures a victory in the runoff.
Political Landscape and Upcoming Vote
The 35th Congressional District is significant due to recent redistricting, as it sits in the competitive San Antonio-to-Austin corridor. Galindo has gained traction online by blending extreme leftist ideals with fringe narratives, while critics argue that her language increasingly reflects open bigotry and potential threats of political violence.
Early voting for the runoff election is currently taking place until May 22. Polls are set to reopen on May 26 for the final voting day. Voters interested in participating can find details regarding polling locations and hours through the Bexar County Elections Department’s official website.
