Congressman Missing From Public View for Over 75 Days; Family Remains Silent

Representative Tom Kean Jr. has not been seen in public for more than 75 days, raising questions among colleagues and constituents alike. Reports indicate a lack of communication, even from House Speaker Mike Johnson, who acknowledged he has not spoken to Kean recently.

Concerns Arise in the Community

Residents in Westfield, New Jersey, have noticed unusual activity—or the lack thereof—at Kean’s Tudor-style home. Several neighbors, wishing to remain anonymous, expressed concern, stating they have not seen either Kean or his wife out in recent weeks. Their observations include the absence of the couple’s car from the driveway and a darkened home.

Among the more curious observations was a solitary gardening glove left on the front lawn, which has added to the neighbors’ worries. In the past few days, further inquiries have emerged regarding Kean’s whereabouts and health.

Official Statement on Health Issues

On April 27, Kean released a statement addressing a “personal medical issue” that has kept him from his duties. He assured his constituents that his recovery is progressing and that he anticipates returning to work shortly. Following this, however, his planned public appearances were subsequently canceled. Kean’s chief of staff, Dan Scharfenberger, noted, “there’s no cameras where Tom is,” suggesting ongoing privacy around his health situation.

Speaker Johnson commented on his last conversation with Kean, stating that he was assured by the congressman that he would be back “soon.” With the tight margins in the House, Johnson’s concerns are heightened, especially as he navigates a contentious budget bill with limited room for dissent within his party.

The Neighborhood’s Perspective

Despite some neighboring homes bustling with activity, Kean’s residence remains relatively still. A report described a notably dirty black Ford F-150 parked outside, which appears to have been untouched, covered in yellow pollen. Additionally, the front door’s thumb-latch handle was found loosening from its fixture.

Westfield police have indicated that they have not responded to any recent calls from Kean’s home. Municipal payment records confirm that while the couple paid a sewer bill in advance on March 31, their property tax bill was paid late on May 6.

One Democratic neighbor expressed her confusion over Kean’s disappearance, even remarking on the persistence of receiving his digital newsletters, while others described the congressman’s absence as a topic of neighborhood gossip.

Recent Developments and Political Fallout

On Tuesday morning, Rhonda Kean was seen returning to their home, but when asked about her husband’s condition, she declined to comment. Kean has missed 88 House roll call votes since March 5, a significant departure from his previously noted attendance record.

Despite his absence, Kean continues to file financial transaction reports. Records show he made stock transactions digitally signed on April 13, with activity recorded between mid- and late March, amounting to between $50,008 and $190,000.

The congressman’s ongoing absence has become a crucial point of discussion in Democratic primary debates, with challengers advocating for a change and suggesting voters should replace him. Yet, Kean remains the only Republican listed on the primary ballot.

Interestingly, while Kean is away, his staff has maintained a vigorous social media presence, having posted at least 115 updates since his last vote. Some of these posts highlighted staff participation in various events, such as a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new business.

Consultant Harrison Neely, involved with Kean’s political team, reiterated that Kean is currently dealing with a medical issue but is under supervised care. Neely emphasized that the expectation for Kean’s full recovery is positive and that the timeline for his return looks promising.
