In a significant political development, several congressional Republicans are openly supporting Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie, defying President Donald Trump. Massie has been a vocal critic of Trump’s administration, particularly regarding its involvement in Iran, and he has twice voted against the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), which is considered one of Trump’s major legislative achievements.
Support from Notable Republicans
During a rally held in Florence, Kentucky, Republican Representatives Lauren Boebert from Colorado, Warren Davidson from Ohio, Victoria Spartz from Indiana, and Senator Rand Paul from Kentucky publicly expressed their backing for Massie. Despite being a strong Trump supporter, Boebert highlighted her support for both Massie and Trump in a statement issued the prior day.
In a response to Boebert’s stance, Trump has threatened to endorse a primary challenger against her, labeling her as “weak-minded” and questioning her authenticity as a representative. In a Truth Social post, Trump described Boebert as a “carpetbagger,” implying that her motivations for running are questionable. He stated, “Is anyone interested in running against Weak Minded Lauren Boebert in Colorado’s Fourth Congressional District?”
Amidst these political tensions, Boebert acknowledged the risks associated with her support for Massie.
Rally Highlights
Senator Rand Paul delivered remarks at the rally, urging voters in Kentucky’s Fourth District to choose Massie. Other notable figures supporting Massie included former Republican Representatives Dana Rohrabacher from California, Matt Gaetz from Florida, Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, and Justin Amash from Michigan, all of whom attended the rally to demonstrate their solidarity.
Massie has also garnered endorsements from MAHA PAC, associated with the Make Healthy Again Movement, as well as pro-life organizations such as Kentucky Right to Life and Northern Kentucky Right to Life.
Trump’s Opposition and Campaign Dynamics
In contrast to this support, Trump has actively endorsed Massie’s opponent, retired Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, who is set to benefit from a campaign appearance by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, a rare move for a sitting Pentagon official. Recent comments made by Vice President JD Vance at a Turning Point USA event falsely claimed that Massie has opposed the Republican Party “on every single issue.”
Massie did vote against the OBBBA in May 2025 and reiterated his opposition in July 2025, citing concerns over Trump’s military actions in Iran, which he described as unconstitutional. Additionally, Massie has taken steps to compel the Department of Justice to release documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, a move that faced initial opposition from Trump.
The tensions between Massie and Trump have been publicly recognized, with Trump previously disparaging Massie as a “complete and total disaster” during a rally. Trump labeled him a “moron” at the National Prayer Breakfast while the congressman was advocating for the release of specific documents.
Financial Stakes in the Primary
As the primary race intensifies, expenditures on advertising have exceeded $32 million, marking it as one of the most expensive House primary races in U.S. history. Notably, lobbying groups including the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) have invested over $9 billion to unseat Massie.
In a surprising twist just before the election, Massie faced allegations from an ex-girlfriend, Cynthia West, who claimed he offered her $5,000 in exchange for her silence regarding Spartz, who was accused of creating a toxic work environment.
Polls indicate that the race remains competitive. As of the latest survey from Quantus Insights, 53% of respondents plan to support Gallrein, while 45% lean towards Massie.
