The Defense Secretary fired back Friday after NBC reported he had been privately discussing a potential 2028 presidential run with friends and associates. Hegseth did not mince words. “100% false,” he wrote, adding that his only focus was leading the War Department under President Donald Trump.
The NBC story, published August 28th, cited two unnamed sources described as familiar with conversations between Hegseth and his wife, Jennifer. The network claimed the couple had raised the possibility of a presidential campaign during private discussions held over several months. Neither Pete nor Jennifer Hegseth was quoted confirming any interest in running.
As originally reported, NBC connected the speculation to Hegseth’s recent appearance at the Iowa State Fair, where he showed up in support of Republican Rep. Zach Nunn. Iowa’s outsized role in presidential primary politics made the visit an obvious peg for campaign speculation. The report also pointed to Hegseth’s strong standing with Trump’s base as a sign that a candidacy could gain traction.
NBC’s anonymous sources reportedly believed Hegseth shared qualities that helped Trump connect with MAGA voters, including toughness, defiance, and conservative positions on social issues. The network did not name either source or clarify how directly they were involved in the conversations being described.
The Pentagon had already pushed back before the story went live. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell told NBC directly, “Secretary Hegseth is not running for president, and his main priority is leading the War Department. All other speculation is foolish.” NBC included that denial in its report but still led with the anonymous claims.
The White House also sidestepped the speculation, choosing instead to highlight Hegseth’s record at the Pentagon. A White House spokeswoman pointed to the administration’s removal of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs from the military and its renewed push for combat readiness. She said Hegseth’s work spoke for itself.
The core dispute here is straightforward. NBC published a story sourced entirely to two unnamed people. The Pentagon denied it before publication. Hegseth denied it after. No named source, and no direct quote from anyone in the Hegseth household, supports the underlying claim. What NBC presented as reporting, the Defense Secretary is calling fiction.
