Capitol Police vehicles were spotted outside Sen. Mitch McConnell’s Washington home as the Senate returned from recess without him.
Conservative commentator Nick Sortor posted the video shortly after 1 p.m. Monday, showing at least one marked Capitol Police vehicle near the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican’s residence. Sortor claimed officers had surrounded the property and noted that McConnell was nowhere to be seen as fellow senators came back to Washington.
The reason for the police presence was not immediately clear. Security vehicles have reportedly appeared near McConnell’s home before, and the presence of Capitol Police near a sitting senator’s residence does not by itself signal a medical emergency.

Even so, the footage is drawing fresh attention to a senator whose extended absence has already sparked weeks of public concern.
As originally reported, McConnell has not been seen at the Capitol since June, following a fall at his Washington home. He was hospitalized on June 14 and later moved to a rehabilitation facility. On August 6, he was discharged from that facility to continue physical therapy at home.
His office released a photo in July showing McConnell with his wife, Elaine Chao, taken at the rehabilitation facility. Digital-forensics experts reviewed the image and found no evidence to support online claims that it was AI-generated or pulled from a previous hospitalization.
McConnell’s prolonged absence has fueled persistent speculation about his condition and his ability to continue serving. His office has offered limited public updates beyond the basic timeline of his hospitalization, rehabilitation, and discharge.
Monday’s scene outside his home added another layer of uncertainty. The Senate was back in session, his colleagues were on the Hill, and Capitol Police vehicles sat outside his residence with no explanation offered to the public.
Whether the police presence was routine security, a response to something specific, or simply a precaution tied to heightened public attention remains unknown. No statement had been issued by McConnell’s office or Capitol Police clarifying the situation at the time the video circulated.
What is clear is that McConnell, the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history, has now been absent from his own chamber for months. His office says he is recovering. His constituents and colleagues are still waiting to see him prove it.
