George Conway Crashes Out of Democratic Primary in Fifth Place as Trump Celebrates Online

Donald Trump was quick to celebrate Tuesday night after prominent Trump critic George Conway finished near the bottom of a crowded New York City Democratic congressional primary.

Conway, a lawyer and co-founder of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, pulled in just 6.1% of the vote in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler. State Assemblyman Micah Lasher won the contest, edging out Alex Bores, while Jack Kennedy Schlossberg, grandson of former President John F. Kennedy, also finished behind the winner.

It was a bruising result for Conway, who had built his campaign largely on opposition to Trump and promises to pursue the president politically if elected to Congress.

As originally reported, Conway, 62, divorced former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway in 2023 after 22 years of marriage. Kellyanne remains a contributor at Fox News.

Earlier on Election Day, Conway had been active on social media, promoting the new book “Regime Change” by White House reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan. The book includes claims that Trump sought the presidency partly to avoid legal jeopardy. Conway posted on X in support of those claims, writing that Haberman had first raised that possibility back in early 2019.

As the returns rolled in and his numbers sank, Trump wasted no time firing back on Truth Social. In a pair of posts, the president called Conway a “Trump Deranged Loser at the highest level” who was getting “absolutely CRUSHED” in what Trump described as a “rather weak field of young and aggressive Communists.”

Trump then went further, referencing his divorce from Kellyanne with a pointed jab. “No wonder his ‘husband’ dumped him like a dog!” Trump wrote, before adding, “This is a truly unattractive person, both inside and out. Have a nice life, George!”

Conway, who has been photographed on the campaign trail with girlfriend Ellen Braaten, was not the only Democrat Trump targeted that night. About 10 minutes after posting about Conway, Trump shifted his attention to Rep. Dan Goldman, who lost his primary to former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander.

It was a rough night all around for figures Trump has long considered political enemies, and the president made sure no one missed it.
