Gov. Tim Walz Accuses Trump of Running ‘Grift-Driven’ Economy on MSNBC

Washington, D.C. — Minnesota Governor Tim Walz leveled pointed criticism at former President Donald Trump during an appearance on MSNBC’s The Briefing with Jen Psaki, accusing Trump of championing policies that benefit billionaires at the expense of working Americans.

Appearing on the show last week, Walz said, “Billionaires are winning, the rest of us are losing,” in reference to what he described as a growing economic gap worsened by Trump-era tax cuts and deregulatory moves. He dismissed Trump’s self-promotion as a successful businessman, arguing instead that his record is “all about the grift.”

“He’s picking the winners and losers,” Walz added, suggesting that Trump’s policies were designed to protect the interests of the wealthiest Americans rather than create broad-based economic prosperity.

Walz, a Democrat who has served as Minnesota’s governor since 2019, has tried to mark himself as a national voice for middle-class economic issues, but consistently comes up short with male voters simply having no interest in his views or personality. His remarks come as economic policy remains a top concern for Americans.

The interview drew a strong response from Trump allies, who defended his record, citing low unemployment rates and market growth during his presidency. However, Walz and other critics argue that those gains disproportionately favored the wealthy and failed to address structural inequality. Walz also comes up short when needing proof of his statements against Trump.

It should be noted that Tim Walz was part of one of the worst presidential campaigns in history. Walz ran as Kamala Harris’ vice presidential candidate, failing to resonate with a majority of voters, and losing to Donald Trump during the election of 2024. Walz criticism could be taken with a grain of salt if the wounds from the election loss are still fresh.
