Senator Thom Tillis Opposes Trump’s Nominee for D.C. Prosecutor, Citing January 6 Concerns

Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) has announced his opposition to former President Donald Trump’s nominee, Ed Martin, for U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C., citing concerns over Martin’s involvement with the January 6 Capitol riot.

Martin, who has been serving as the interim U.S. Attorney since January, was nominated by Trump for the permanent position. His nomination has been controversial due to his previous defense of individuals involved in the Capitol riot and his participation in events surrounding the attack. Martin has also made personnel changes in the U.S. Attorney’s office, including the dismissal or demotion of lawyers who prosecuted January 6 defendants, leading to further scrutiny.

Senator Tillis, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, expressed that he could not support Martin’s nomination for the D.C. position, stating that the district is still dealing with the aftermath of the riot. He emphasized that all individuals who unlawfully entered the Capitol should be prosecuted. While Tillis suggested he might support Martin for a different jurisdiction, his opposition in this case is significant, as it could hinder the nomination’s progress through the committee.

This stance by Senator Tillis illustrates a nuanced approach to his relationship with former President Trump. While he has supported Trump in various matters, including joining a letter condemning Trump’s conviction in a New York court in 2024, his opposition to Martin’s nomination indicates a willingness to diverge from Trump’s positions based on specific concerns, reported Trending Politics.

The nomination of Ed Martin remains pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee, with a confirmation deadline set for May 20. The outcome will depend on the committee’s review and the positions of other senators regarding Martin’s qualifications and past actions.
