Tom Homan, President Trump’s border czar, defended the arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka during a visit to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Newark, New Jersey. Baraka was detained and charged with misdemeanor trespassing while accompanying Democratic Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman, Rob Menendez, and LaMonica McIver to assess conditions at the Delaney Hall detention center.
Homan characterized the visit as politically motivated and emphasized that any actions impeding ICE operations would lead to arrests. He stated that law enforcement would continue enforcing immigration laws despite public or political backlash.
A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson claimed that body-camera footage shows some Democratic officials assaulting ICE officers, though no specific evidence or names have been released. Representative Watson Coleman refuted the allegations, criticizing the Trump administration for spreading falsehoods, said USA Journal.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez condemned the arrests, accusing DHS officials, including Secretary Kristi Noem, of violating congressional oversight protocols. She warned of serious political consequences if Democratic lawmakers were harmed or further targeted, said The Daily Beast.
This incident underscores the escalating tensions between Democratic lawmakers and the Trump administration over immigration enforcement and governance oversight. The main problem for Democratic Rep. AOC is that no one really takes her seriously on anything and she’s more of a mouthpiece than anything.
