BALTIMORE — The U.S. Justice Department has filed 18 charges against the operators of a cargo ship involved in a tragic incident that resulted in the collapse of a Maryland bridge over two years ago. The incident led to the deaths of six people.
Federal prosecutors have officially charged the international companies, Synergy Marine Pte Ltd and Synergy Maritime Pte Ltd, along with technical superintendent Radhakrishnan Karthik Nair. The charges include conspiracy, misconduct, and neglect of ship officers that resulted in death, along with obstructing justice.
Details of the Incident
The charges stem from the events of March 26, 2024, when the 900-foot cargo ship Dali lost power and collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge. This collision occurred while a work crew was engaged in pothole repairs, tragically resulting in the deaths of six construction workers.
In addition to the fatalities, another construction worker was injured after falling into the Patapsco River during the collapse. Fortunately, he survived. An inspector working as a subcontractor for the Maryland Transportation Authority was able to escape without injury, as were nearly two dozen crew members aboard the Dali, along with two harbor pilots who were assisting with navigation.
Legal Charges and Environmental Impact
The Justice Department has outlined various charges against the ship operators, including conspiracy to willfully fail to notify the U.S. Coast Guard about a known hazardous condition. Other charges include obstruction of an agency proceeding and making false statements. Furthermore, the companies are being held accountable for misdemeanors linked to violations of the Clean Water Act, the Oil Pollution Act, and the Refuse Act. These charges pertain to the discharge of pollutants into the Patapsco River, which included shipping containers, their contents, and oil.
Consequences of the Collapse
The fallout from the bridge collapse was significant, leading to a two-month shutdown of the critical Baltimore port. Ongoing efforts are being made to reconstruct the bridge, underlining the incident’s lasting impact on both infrastructure and local communities.
“The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge was a preventable tragedy of enormous consequence,” stated acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. He emphasized that this indictment marks a key step in holding accountable those whose negligence contributed to this disaster. The incident not only resulted in the loss of six lives but also released pollutants into the Patapsco River and Chesapeake Bay, causing economic damage estimated to exceed five billion dollars.
Community Response
The six victims were construction workers engaged in improving roadway safety when their lives were tragically cut short. Survivor Julio Cervantes Suarez expressed a desire for the fallen workers to be remembered for their contributions and values. “They were families, good people, and good workers,” he noted. The emotional weight of this incident continues to resonate with the community.
Next Steps for the Accused
Both Synergy Marine Pte Ltd and Synergy Maritime Pte Ltd have international roots, with one based in Singapore and the other in Chennai, India. Technical superintendent Radhakrishnan Karthik Nair is an Indian national, currently believed to be in India. Prosecutors have indicated they will use all available law enforcement mechanisms to ensure he faces charges in the U.S.
A report from the National Transportation Safety Board revealed that the cargo ship was maneuvering out of Baltimore harbor when it unexpectedly lost power and propulsion, ultimately leading to the catastrophic collision with the bridge. Maryland U.S. Attorney Kelly Hayes highlighted claims that the ship had been altered in a manner that hindered its ability to regain power, thus resulting in the disastrous accident.
This story serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maritime safety regulations and the need for accountability in tragic incidents such as this.
