“I was elected to get them the hell out” – Trump says about illegal immigrants and deportations

The Trump administration is intensifying its immigration enforcement strategy under the direction of Tom Homan, who was appointed as the administration’s “border czar” following Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January 2025. Since taking office, President Trump has prioritized mass deportations as a central component of his second-term immigration policy.

According to Homan, approximately **139,000 undocumented immigrants** have been deported in the first three and a half months of the administration, a pace exceeding that of the Biden administration over a similar time frame. The focus has been on removing individuals with criminal convictions or pending charges, though all undocumented immigrants remain subject to enforcement action.

“This is the most aggressive interior enforcement campaign we’ve ever launched,” Homan said in late April. He urged undocumented individuals to self-deport, warning they could face **fines of up to \$998 per day** and possible criminal prosecution if they refuse to leave voluntarily.

Despite the administration’s high-profile crackdown, it remains well below its stated goal of deporting **1 million people per year**. An analysis by Barclays estimated that the current pace equates to about **120,000 deportations annually**, suggesting logistical and legal hurdles to achieving the president’s aims.

To address non-compliance from so-called “sanctuary jurisdictions” — states and municipalities that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities — Trump is backing legislation to tie federal funds to immigration enforcement. The **Law Enforcement Solidarity Act**, introduced by House Republicans, would penalize jurisdictions that refuse to honor immigration detainers or otherwise obstruct federal operations.

In addition to ramping up deportations, the administration claims significant progress at the U.S.-Mexico border. Officials report a **94% decrease in border apprehensions** compared to the same period in 2024, attributing the drop to stricter enforcement and expedited removals.

The immigration crackdown has sparked criticism from immigrant advocacy groups and civil liberties organizations, who argue the policies are overly punitive and raise due process concerns. Meanwhile, supporters praise the administration for following through on campaign promises and emphasizing national sovereignty.

President Trump and Tom Homan have stated that deportation efforts will continue to escalate throughout 2025, with further announcements expected in the coming months.

When Trump was asked if the illegal immigrants in America deserve due process during an interview on NBC, his response was quite interesting. Trump said: “I don’t know… If you’re talking about that, then we’d have to have a million or 2 million or 3 million trials… I was elected to get them the hell out of here and the courts are holding me from doing it.”
