Golden Globes Garner Less than 10 Million Viewers Despite NFL Boost

The Golden Globes saw viewership numbers crumble to a brutal seven-figure number following this week’s awards show, even though the show aired directly on the heels of an NFL game, which should have bolstered the number of folks watching. With Hollywood already reeling from poor box office earnings in 2024, The Golden Globes appear to be the next sign of trouble for the film industry.

The Golden Globes, despite a disappointing turnout to the show, did actually see an increase over last year’s even more abysmal number. The 9.4 million viewers towered over the poorly low number of 6.3 million that took the time to watch the 2022 Golden Globes. While some in the media are championing this as a massive increase, the still-low turnout is causing concern for those who once held the Golden Globes with high esteem.

David NG of Breitbart News took some time to explain why this nearly 50% increase in viewership may not actually be as good of a sign as many in Hollywood are saying. In fact, he explains, it may be little more than the symptom of a scheduling decision that artificially inflated the viewership compared to the last show.

Last Year’s Golden Globes were held on a Tuesday on NBC, whereas this year, the show was aired on a Sunday and followed directly on the heels of the NFL’s Green Bay Packers vs. Chicago Bears matchup in the evening.

This may explain the sudden jump in viewership, with the show being held directly after a football game and on the wrong channel. Some viewers, even a large amount of viewers, may have forgotten to change the channel after the game or otherwise remained on the Golden Globes out of mere convenience.

No matter how they slice it, the Golden Globes have suffered for viewership in the recent editions of the awards show. Back in 2020, their last booming success, the show brought in a whopping 18.4 million viewers. That show dwarfs any other that came post-COVID in a way that should raise alarm bells in Hollywood.

Some outlets, like MSN, pointed out some ways that this show could be seen as a massive win for Hollywood and for its other award shows, which have also struggled in recent years. Whether that is true forecasting or undue optimizing is yet to be seen.

MSN explained that this year’s Golden Globes set a new record of concurrent viewers for the Paramount+ streaming service since the 2023 Grammys. That may mean that there is growth in the Hollywood Award Show industry. The award show was also trending all over social media, with MSN explaining that it may have garnered over 30 billion impressions.

Whether the Golden Globes will continue to grow is yet to be seen. Critics are still insisting that without the NFL rivalry game immediately before the show, there is no real reason to believe that results would have been any different than last year. Eyes will squarely be focused on the 2025 Golden Globes to see if the industry is actually seeing the rebound that it hopes is occurring.
