In the wake of the controversial ICE enforcement actions in Minneapolis, including the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renée Good by federal agents, former President Trump, Homeland Security officials, and other critics have directly blamed Minnesota leaders such as Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz for contributing to the unrest with their public statements about immigration and federal enforcement.

Trump and others have accused them of “inciting” aggressive protest behavior and hostility toward federal officers, arguing that such rhetoric has “fueled chaos” rather than protected communities.

The Justice Department has also subpoenaed Walz, Frey, and other state officials as part of an investigation into whether their actions impeded federal immigration operations, a move that Minnesota leaders have criticized as politically motivated. Amid ongoing anti-ICE protests, legal challenges, and heightened tensions, reactions remain deeply divided between those who see local leadership as defending residents and those who argue their rhetoric has exacerbated conflict
