During an interview on CNN’s State of the Union, former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger blasted both major political parties for what he called “extreme gerrymandering.”
Speaking with Jake Tapper, he said Democrats and Republicans are “trying to out-cheat each other” with redistricting instead of competing on their policy records.
He pointed to New Mexico as an example, noting that although about 45.9% of voters backed Donald Trump in the 2024 election, all three of its U.S. House seats are held by Democrats. Schwarzenegger also mentioned Massachusetts, where roughly 40% voted for Trump but the state sends no Republicans to Congress.
He urged the adoption of independent redistricting commissions like the one he created in California, so district maps are drawn by citizens rather than partisan lawmakers.
