Minnesota daycare spells 'learning' wrong and receives $4 million from taxpayers

The Quality Learing Center in Minneapolis has indeed come under intense public scrutiny after a viral video showed a misspelled sign and no children present during midday operating hours, despite the facility being licensed for 99 children and receiving millions in taxpayer funds.

However, the claim of 99 "missing children" is not accurate; rather, it refers to the center being licensed to care for that number of children while appearing vacant in the video - so in other words, the children don't seem to exist. They're not missing because they're not real.

Independent journalist Nick Shirley visited the center in late December 2025, capturing footage of an empty facility and a sign that misspelled "Learning" as "Learing". Public data cited in news reports indicates the center received approximately $1.9 million in state funds in fiscal year 2025 alone, with total disbursements over a broader recent period attributed at roughly $4 million.

The incident has become a focal point in a broader ongoing federal investigation into alleged "industrial-scale" fraud within Minnesota's social service programs, which authorities suggest could involve billions of dollars in misused funds across various programs, not just child care.

The Quality Learing Center itself has faced extensive issues in the past, accumulating 95 licensing violations from the Minnesota Department of Human Services between 2019 and 2023, including safety concerns and missing child records. There is no indication at this time that the Quality Learning Center has been formally charged with wrongdoing, and the investigation remains active.
