United States Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has repeatedly identified Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as a significant threat to both national and local security. During a December 2025 Cabinet meeting with President Trump, Noem referred to Walz as a "wacko governor" and alleged he was either "an idiot" or "did it on purpose" regarding massive fraud within the state's visa and government programs.
She claimed that approximately 50% of certain visa holders in Minnesota are "fraudulent," asserting that Walz's administration allowed individuals into the country illegally who "never should have been in this country."
Beyond visa fraud, Noem has characterized Walz’s leadership as a danger to public safety due to his lack of cooperation with federal immigration authorities. During an October 2025 press conference in Minneapolis, she blasted Walz for refusing to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, stating that "more violent crimes are being perpetuated in these communities because of their refusal to defend American citizen."
She specifically criticized Walz's rhetoric, noting she "didn't know how he sleeps at night" after he reportedly compared certain federal enforcement tactics to the "Gestapo."
Noem's warnings about Walz also extend to his past international ties. Since late 2024 and continuing into her tenure as DHS Secretary, she has frequently cited Walz's history with China, including dozens of visits and teaching positions, as evidence that he is a "national security risk."
She has argued that Walz's actions and policies demonstrate a desire to make the United States "more like China" and more "communist," which she frames as a fundamental threat to American sovereignty and the food supply.
In response, Governor Walz has dismissed Noem's characterizations as politically motivated distractions from what he describes as "unconstitutional" federal overreach. Throughout December 2025, Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan have sent formal letters to Secretary Noem demanding a review of ICE operations in the Twin Cities, alleging that federal agents have unlawfully detained U.S. citizens and violated civil liberties during an aggressive immigration enforcement "surge."
