U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) is facing a federal indictment involving 15 criminal counts, including theft of government funds, money laundering, and campaign finance violations.
The charges stem from an alleged scheme where the congresswoman and her brother, Edwin Cherfilus, misappropriated more than $5 million in FEMA disaster relief funds originally intended for COVID-19 vaccination staffing.
Prosecutors claim that after their family-owned business, Trinity Healthcare Services, received a significant federal overpayment, the defendants laundered the money through multiple accounts instead of returning it.
The indictment alleges that a substantial portion of these stolen funds, approximately $1.14 million, was funneled into her 2021 congressional campaign through "straw donors" to disguise the illegal source of the money. In addition to campaign financing, the government claims Cherfilus-McCormick used the misappropriated funds for personal luxury purchases, specifically a 3.14-carat yellow diamond ring valued at $109,000.
On December 26, 2025, she drew renewed public scrutiny after eagle-eyed social media users noticed the ring had been edited out of an official holiday portrait posted to her account.
Beyond the theft and laundering charges, the congresswoman is accused of conspiracy to file false tax statements and aiding in fraudulent tax returns. The federal grand jury alleges that she falsely claimed $4.6 million in business expenses and $1.2 million in charitable contributions on her 2021 tax returns.
Cherfilus-McCormick surrendered to authorities on November 25, 2025, and was released on a $60,000 bond. She has pleaded not guilty to all charges, characterizing the indictment as a "sham" and a political distraction. If convicted on all counts, she faces a maximum penalty of 53 years in federal prison.
