In December 2025, the controversy surrounding Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s 2023 "Electeds of Color Holiday Party" resurfaced following a scathing letter from the Trump administration that criticized the event's exclusionary nature.

The original dispute began in December 2023 when a staff member accidentally emailed an invitation for the private "Electeds of Color" dinner to the entire Boston City Council, including its seven white members.

Approximately 15 minutes later, the aide sent a follow-up email apologizing for the "honest mistake" and rescinding the invitation for the white councilors, leading to accusations of segregation and divisiveness from critics and some city officials. Mayor Wu defended the event as a decade-long tradition for an affinity group representing minority elected officials across all levels of Massachusetts government.

She emphasized that the dinner was just one of many holiday celebrations she hosted, including a separate, larger gathering to which all elected officials and cabinet members were invited regardless of race.

Wu argued that creating dedicated spaces for mentorship and fellowship among communities of color was a way to embrace diversity and acknowledged that the group had grown significantly since she first joined the City Council in 2014.

The fallout from the event extended into 2024 and 2025 as new financial details emerged through public records requests. In May 2024, it was revealed that although the party was organized by city staff and held at the city-owned Parkman House, it was ultimately funded by Wu’s campaign account rather than taxpayer dollars.

This prompted the Massachusetts GOP to call for an investigation into a potential "co-mingling" of public and campaign resources, arguing that using city staff during work hours to promote a campaign-funded event violated state regulations. Despite these challenges, Wu has remained firm in her support of the gathering, characterizing the ongoing criticism as politically motivated.
