While Bill Gates is a defendant in an ongoing civil lawsuit in the Netherlands, he is not required to testify in person or physically appear in a Dutch courtroom. The proceedings, which stem from a case filed by seven individuals in Leeuwarden, are civil rather than criminal.

Under the Dutch Code of Civil Procedure, defendants in such private disputes can be represented entirely by their attorneys and do not face "indictment" or orders for personal attendance typical of criminal trials.

In late 2024, the District Court of Northern Netherlands ruled that it holds international jurisdiction to hear the claims against Gates. This decision rejected a legal challenge from Gates' team, which had argued the court lacked authority because he is a U.S. resident.

Following this ruling, the case moved to the substantive hearing stage, but court spokespersons clarified that this does not obligate Gates to be physically present in the country in 2025.

The lawsuit itself alleges that Gates and other high-profile figures, including Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla and former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, misled the public about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines.

The plaintiffs claim they suffered physical and mental injuries after receiving the shots and are seeking financial damages. While social media reports have occasionally claimed Gates was "ordered to stand trial," legal experts emphasize that the case is a private dispute that could only result in a monetary judgment if the plaintiffs succeed.
