Trump just clapped back at Colombian President Petro, who accused the U.S. of being on “stolen land,” in gangster fashion: "He's gotta watch his ass because he makes cocaine, and they send it into the U.S…he’s got factories and we know where they are.”
Colombia remains the primary source for the U.S. cocaine market in 2025, supplying between 84% and 92% of all cocaine seized in the country. This dominance is fueled by record-breaking production levels in Colombia, which reached a potential capacity of roughly 2,600 to 3,000 metric tons annually. While other Andean nations like Peru and Bolivia contribute to the global supply, their combined impact on the U.S. market is minimal, as their exports are largely directed toward Europe and emerging markets in Asia.
The trafficking of this cocaine primarily occurs through maritime corridors, with the Eastern Pacific route accounting for approximately 74% to 80% of the drug flow toward North America. This route utilizes fishing vessels, "go-fast" boats, and increasingly sophisticated semi-submersibles to move shipments from Colombia’s Pacific coast to Central America and Mexico before they cross into the U.S.. The remaining supply generally moves through the Western Caribbean (16%) and the Caribbean corridor (8%), often involving transit points in Venezuela or various island nations.
Economically, the cocaine trade has grown to be a cornerstone of the Colombian economy, rivaling traditional industries. In 2025, estimates valued the trade at roughly $15.3 billion to $18.2 billion, which in some reporting years has exceeded the value of crude oil, the country's leading legal export. Despite increased international enforcement and record seizures, including over 883 tons intercepted in 2024, the sheer volume of production means that enough cocaine reaches the U.S. to support a consumer market estimated at over $28 billion annually
