In November 1998, President Bill Clinton agreed to pay $850,000 to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Paula Jones, a former Arkansas state employee. The settlement followed a four-year legal battle that eventually led to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that a sitting president is not immune to civil litigation while in office.

As part of the agreement, then President Clinton did not apologize or admit to any wrongdoing. His attorneys maintained the claims were baseless and that he settled only to end the ongoing legal distraction.

The payment was officially sent in January 1999. Approximately $475,000 was covered by a personal liability insurance policy (Chubb Group), while the remaining $375,000 came from the Clintons' personal funds.

Paula Jones did not receive the full $850,000. In March 1999, a judge ruled that she was entitled to only $200,000 of the settlement, with the remaining $650,000 allocated to cover her legal fees and expenses.

While the civil suit was settled, it played a critical role in the broader Lewinsky scandal. Clinton’s sworn testimony during the Jones case, in which he denied a relationship with Monica Lewinsky, became the basis for the perjury and obstruction of justice charges that led to his impeachment by the House of Representatives
