Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith announced her resignation, effective December 31, 2025. While Smith cited personal reasons and a desire to spend more time with family, her departure follows a period of intense pressure, including a federal intervention into D.C. policing earlier in the year. Her tenure, which began in July 2023, made history as she was the first Black woman to lead the department permanently.

The resignation has been overshadowed by a December 2025 House Oversight Committee report accusing Smith of fostering a "toxic culture" and pressuring district commanders to manipulate or downgrade crime statistics to create the appearance of lower crime rates. Smith and Mayor Muriel Bowser have forcefully denied these allegations, with Bowser dismissing the report as "politically motivated".

On December 19, 2025, Smith delivered a defiant farewell address during her "walkout" ceremony at MPD headquarters, adopting a sermon-like tone she referred to as "Rev. Pamela A. Smith". The speech peaked with an emotional rebuttal to critics: The Outburst: Addressing her "haters," Smith invoked the Bible and shouted, "F you". Immediate Forgiveness: She quickly followed the remark by clarifying, "It’s not a drop the mic moment... I forgive you," comparing her message to Jesus on the cross forgiving his persecutors.

Defense of Integrity: Smith shouted "How dare you!" at her critics and asserted she would never compromise 28 years of law enforcement integrity "for a few crime numbers".

Mayor Bowser has appointed Jeffery Carroll, a veteran MPD executive assistant chief, as the interim police chief starting January 1, 2026. Carroll has already pledged to address concerns by forming an independent auditing team to review the accuracy of the department's crime data.

She was completely useless at her job and an example showing why DEI hiring is a bad practice.
