Jeremiah Ellison, son of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, has been receiving a $57,000 stipend from Harvard University for a full-time fellowship while continuing to draw his full $110,000 annual salary as a Minneapolis City Council member.
The situation has drawn criticism from other council members and the public, primarily because the fellowship requires him to live in Cambridge, Massachusetts, raising questions about his ability to fulfill his duties in Minneapolis.
Total Income: Jeremiah Ellison is receiving approximately $167,000 annually from the combined sources.
The Harvard fellowship is a full-time, paid position that requires residency in Massachusetts, while Minneapolis rules generally require council members to attend meetings in person.
Ellison stated he would return to Minneapolis twice a month for full City Council meetings and attend committee meetings virtually. However, remote voting is not permitted by Minneapolis rules, leading to concerns about the disenfranchisement of his North Minneapolis district.
Internal emails show Ellison requested, through an aide, to use city funds to cover the cost of his flights between Harvard and Minneapolis, a request that was met with further scrutiny.
The arrangement has been called "unacceptable" by fellow council members, and the City Clerk proposed a resolution to address the issue. Term & Future: Ellison is not running for reelection, and his term ends in January.
Keith Ellison’s son was allegedly collecting a $110K salary from City Council while attending Harvard University, where he also received a $57K stipend
