Melinda French Gates expressed concern that her granddaughters, Leila and Mia, may grow up with fewer rights than she had, particularly in the context of reproductive rights in the United States. In a New York Times op-ed published on May 28, 2024, she stated, “As shocking as it is to contemplate, my 1-year-old granddaughter may grow up with fewer rights than I had,” highlighting the rollback of women’s rights, including the loss of abortion access in 14 states following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

She reiterated this sentiment in various interviews and her memoir The Next Day, released in April 2025, noting, “My granddaughter should not have less rights than I had,” and emphasizing the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision on creating “women’s-health deserts” and high maternal mortality rates. In a video posted on X on April 16, 2025, she specifically said, “My two granddaughters… don’t have as many rights right now as I did growing up,” underscoring her motivation for donating $1 billion to women’s causes, including reproductive rights, through her organization Pivotal Ventures. This statement drew mixed reactions on X, with some users questioning which specific rights were lost, reflecting polarized sentiment on the issue.

In other words, Melinda is clueless.
