Monica Cannon-Grant, founder of the nonprofit Violence in Boston, is planning to plead guilty to federal fraud charges related to misusing donations to her organization. In a one-page filing in federal court on Friday, she requested a change of plea hearing. Cannon-Grant faces a 27-count indictment, including charges of wire fraud, mail fraud, false statements, and filing false tax returns.

Federal investigators claim that Cannon-Grant and her husband, Clark Grant, solicited over $1 million in donations and grants from various sources but spent much of it on personal expenses, such as car payments, insurance bills, luxury nail salon visits, expensive dinners, and a Maryland vacation. They also allegedly misused nearly $54,000 in pandemic relief funds deposited into the charity’s account for their personal benefit.

Cannon-Grant gained recognition in 2020 for organizing protests and supporting the Black Lives Matter movement in Boston after the killing of George Floyd by police.
