An NYPD officer who threw a cooler at a fleeing drug dealer has been sentenced to 3–9 years in prison. In 2023, Sgt. Erik Duran was involved in a Bronx drug sting when a suspect sped off on a scooter toward two officers making another arrest. Acting to protect them, Duran threw a cooler, knocking the suspect off and causing fatal head injuries.
Despite a spotless record, he was convicted of manslaughter. At sentencing, Judge Guy Mitchell dismissed the defense that Duran was protecting his team, saying he should have let the suspect pass and could have caught him another day.
Many see this as a serious miscarriage of justice, with activist judges jailing officers who risk their lives, while career criminals roam NYC streets with little consequence. The conviction sends a troubling message: police must now treat even the most dangerous suspects with extreme caution, fearing prison for split-second protective actions. This decision damages police morale and public safety, marking a dark day for justice in New York.
Just another case of the scumbag legal system protecting the scumbag criminals.
