Mae Jemison is an American physician, engineer, and former NASA astronaut, born October 17, 1956. She became the first Black woman to travel into space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1992. Jemison joined NASA’s astronaut program in 1987 after working as a general practitioner and serving in the Peace Corps. She orbited Earth for nearly eight days, conducting scientific experiments. Post-NASA, she founded a technology consulting firm and the Jemison Group, focusing on science education and sustainable development. She’s also a professor, author, and advocate for STEM diversity.
