Hyundai's 'Crab Walk' technology is freaking people out

The e-Cornering System is a fully packaged system that bolts to each corner of the vehicle and features its own suspension system, steering servo, and electric motor. While the standard Ioniq 5 makes do with two motors for its AWD system—one front, one rear—the stock drive axles wouldn't work with this extreme of a steering setup. Certainly not at full opposite lock as you see here, where the front and rear tires practically point at one another.

Such steering angles not only allow the Ioniq 5 test car to do a real, fully sideways crab walk—not just at a slight forward angle like the Hummer—it can also drive diagonally, pivot in place, and even pull off a true zero-degree turn without needing to drive each wheel individually, since all four wheels can steer.

The bad news is that the Ioniq 5 needed its front and rear bumpers cut in order to facilitate the system's ability to turn 90 degrees in each direction. It probably also required extensive changes to its wheel wells and subframes to fit the experimental e-Cornering System, as the packaging is rather large and bulky. But the Hyundai does retain its lower control arms, albeit modified in order to line up with the kingpin inclination of the system.
