‘Yellowstone’ season 5 is set to return this summer on Paramount Network, but Kevin Costner may be on the way out soon. Co-creator and showrunner for TV’s top-rated drama 'Yellowstone,' Taylor Sheridan, Paramount Global, and Paramount Network are moving to end their signature show in its current form, so it may end in spectacular fashion. But to continue the Dutton saga, they plot a potential franchise extension, as they are in talks with Matthew McConaughey for the new show.
Several of the big stars are expected to be included to move over to the McConaughey-led series, but it is still not clear which of the 'Yellowstone' cast will join McConaughey.
This is what a Paramount Network spokesperson said: “We have no news to report. Kevin Costner is a big part of 'Yellowstone' and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come. Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built. Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”
Disagreements over shooting schedules with star Kevin Costner were the crux of the issue included with the original 'Yellowstone' series. Costner had originally limited himself to 65 days of shooting on 'Yellowstone,' but sources tell that for the first part of the current season, he only wanted to shoot for 50 days. But when the time for the second batch of episodes of the current, fifth season of 'Yellowstone' came, he only wanted to spend a week shooting.
Costner, who just won best television actor in a drama series at the Golden Globes, is also directing and starring in his multi-part western epic 'Horizon,' which he co-wrote with Jon Baird that landed at Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line, as reported by Deadline.
A source of frustration for Sheridan is the fact that Costner plays John Dutton, the patriarch of the Dutton's, and it is understood to be causing morale problems for the other stars of the show, which includes Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Kelsey Asbille, Cole Hauser, Wes Bentley, and Gil Birmingham.
Sources said that Costner’s most recent proposal was declined by Paramount Network and that instead, the network has made the decision to move on to the other show. A 'Yellowstone' franchise extension that Sheridan will write with McConaughey as the star, is what all parties are now wrangling about, while currently, the star for the 'True Detective' is in negotiations.
