Chick-fil-A faces backlash from two-year-old video of CEO

A video with Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy was controversial about 2-3 years ago and has resurfaced. It's controversial again and conservatives are calling for boycotts, but some of the headlines may have been deceiving or misleading, leading to the backlash after Dan Cathy shined a Black man's shoes during a panel.

This took place a few years ago at the Passion City Church in Atlanta where it was Dan Cathy, Christian musician Lecrae Moore, and Pastor Louie Giglio. Cathy told a story about racism and suggested that everyone in the world have an "apologetic heart." That's around the time in the video where he started to shine Lecrae's shoes and the video turned into a wildfire of viral social media posts.

Cathy said: “I invite folks to put some words to action here... And if we need to find somebody that needs to have their shoe shined, we need to just go right on over, and shine their shoes, whether they got tennis shoes on or not — maybe they have sandals on — but it really doesn’t matter.”

Despite Chick-fil-A having strong Christian values, they're now facing potential 'Budlighting' boycotts once again, even though this video is several years old. News outlets and social media users are making suggestions that may be in or out of context, but it's going fairly crazy once again. Yahoo News reported on this two years ago giving some more insight to what happened then, and is likely happening again:

Cathy and his family, who own Chick-fil-A, are known for their Christian values, which influence business decisions, such as shutting doors on Sundays. The executive later revealed that he bought about 1,500 shoe-shine brushes a few years and gave them out to members of the Chick-fil-A staff.

While Cathy’s message was intended as a display of repentance, it was ill-received by some individuals on social media, with conservative pundits and politicians among the unimpressed.

Chick-fil-A has a fairly good history of having strong values, so maybe we should give Dan Cathy the benefit of the doubt and watch the full video to see what the true context was. After watching the video, then we ask if Dan Cathy inappropriate or was he taken out of context? You be the judge.

No Clucking Around: PA Chick-fil-A BANS certain people thanks to rowdy behavior

A specific Chick-fil-A in Pennsylvania has banned people under the age of 16 if they are not accompanied by a parent or other adult thanks to ongoing rowdy behavior from teenagers who don't know how to act. The Chick-fil-A in Royersford, PA posted a sign on the window and issued this statement on their Facebook page:

We contemplated long and hard before posting this, but decided it was time. Often on Saturdays and days when schools are off, we have school-age children visiting the restaurant without their parents. Usually, these children and teens are dropped off for several hours at a local bounce park and groups of them then walk over to our restaurant.

While we love being a community restaurant and serving guests of all ages, some issues need to be addressed. When groups of unaccompanied children and teens visit our restaurant, the following unacceptable behaviors often occur:

*Volume. They are loud, and their conversation often contains a lot of explicit language. We are a family friendly restaurant where this is not tolerated.

*Mistreatment of property. Food and trash are often thrown around and left on the tables, chairs, and on the floor. Tables and restrooms are vandalized. Decorations are stolen.

*Disrespect of employees. Employees are laughed at, made fun of and treated rudely. Employees are cursed at and ignored when they ask the children and teens to either change their behavior or leave.

*Unsafe behaviors also occur walking through the parking lot and drive thru lanes.

As you can imagine, this is not a pleasant experience. We want to provide a comfortable and safe environment for our guests and our staff, and also to protect our building. Therefore, we cannot allow this to continue. As a result, to dine in our restaurant, anyone under the age of 16 is required to be accompanied by an adult. If not accompanied by an adult, they may come in to purchase food, but must take it to go.

To those unaccompanied children and teens that have visited us and acted appropriately, we thank you. But we also apologize. Due to the numerous extreme behaviors of many of your peers, we must make a blanket rule covering anyone under the age of 16.

Parents, we are not blaming you. Children and teens are learning to navigate the world free from supervision and often push the boundaries. We simply can’t let them push those boundaries anymore at our restaurant. We encourage you to talk to your children and ask about behaviors they have seen and perhaps participated in.

Thank you for understanding and for your support.
