Former UFC fighter hit by bus, dead at 29

A former ranked UFC fighter, Felipe Colares, has been killed at the tender age of 29 after being struck by a bus, according to reports.

"Rodrigo Babi, Colares’ coach, told Combate that Colares was in Rio de Janeiro when a bus hit him Monday morning after a training session. Colares was tended to by first responders after the accident, but sadly died while on his way to a nearby hospital, according to Combate’s report," the Daily Caller noted.

The report was subsequently confirmed by MMA Fighting. Monday afternoon, French promotion firm Ares Fighting Championship also confirmed the fighter's death.

His last professional fight was in February at Ares FC 12 in Paris, where he defeated Alioune Nahaye with a rear naked choke submission.

Prior to his tenure at Ares, Colares competed in six UFC fights spanning from February 2019 to May 2021. During his time in the UFC, he accumulated a record of 2-4, securing wins against Domingo Pilarte at UFC on ESPN 4 in 2019 and Luke Sanders at UFC on ESPN 23 in 2021. Following consecutive defeats to Chris Gutierrez and Chase Hooper in 2021 and 2022, Colares shifted to Ares.

Beginning with his debut in North Extreme Cagefighting in 2013, Colares amassed a professional record of 11-4. Before his transition to the UFC, Colares claimed the Jungle Fight featherweight championship title by defeating Caio Gregorio in 2017.

Colares gained media attention in January for preventing an alleged robbery in Rio. He shared pictures on social media, where he explained how he apprehended a man who had supposedly snatched a woman's phone. Colares reported that he employed his jiu-jitsu expertise to detain the perpetrator.
