Ford issued warning to Lightening EV drivers

In a months-long of real-world winter driving in Alaska and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Ford F-150® Lightning™ pickup has been tested in extremely cold conditions, and the results are good.

But all-electric vehicles experience energy decreases in cold temperatures due to battery cell chemistry, despite the fact that its battery has been subjected to temperatures as high as 140°F to as low as minus 40°F in Ford’s atmospheric test chambers.

So before the real winter comes, Ford wants to help make their customers across the United States and Canada aware that in low temperatures they could see a significant reduction in range, which is normal, as temperatures below 40°F cause the electrolyte fluid to become sluggish, limiting how much power is available to discharge and how quickly the vehicle’s battery can charge, reported an article on FORD's website.

Here are some tips below from Ford, in order to help maximize your F-150 Lightning range in winter:

The first, and arguably the most logical one, would be to park your F-150 Lightning in a garage or anywhere indoors whenever possible.

The second tip says that you should keep your F-150 Lightning plugged in when parked.

The third helpful tip is for the times when you are planning a longer commute. It would be wise to precondition your vehicle using departure times to warm the battery while plugged in. This can be done by using the FordPass app or your truck's center screen.

Tip number four says that, in order to reduce energy consumed by HVAC, if your vehicle is equipped, use the heated seats and steering wheel as primary heat.

Tip number five says that when you are charging your vehicle, turn off the heater if possible, or lower the temperature enough to remain comfortable, especially when using DCFC.

The sixth tip covers the snow conditions. So if your F-150 Lightning is covered with snow, in order to eliminate extra weight and drag, brush all the snow off your vehicle before driving.

Tip seven says that high speeds use more energy, so you should keep driving speeds moderate in cold temperatures.

Last but not least, tip number eight from Ford says that you should ensure your tires are at the proper pressure.

Hope these tips will come in handy for the new Ford F-150® Lightning™ drivers over the winter.

Drive safely and have a nice trip.
