Ukraine security service says corrupt officials stole $40 million meant to buy mortar shells
Is this just the tip of the iceberg of corruption? A report on NPR talked about nearly $40 million being stolen by corrupt Ukraine officials. That money was designated to buy mortar shells to be used during the ongoing conflict, but it ended up in the hands of corruption instead. Even worse, this report comes directly from Ukraine's security service, according to NPR.
This deserves a massive investigation and consequence.
The SBU said late Saturday that five people have been charged, with one person detained while trying to cross the Ukrainian border. If found guilty, they face up to 12 years in prison.
The investigation comes as Kyiv attempts to clamp down on corruption in a bid to speed up its membership in the European Union and NATO. Officials from both blocs have demanded widespread anti-graft reforms before Kyiv can join them.
This deserves a massive investigation and consequence.
