In a significant development regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, President Trump announced on Friday that both nations will engage in a prisoner swap involving 1,000 individuals as part of a three-day ceasefire. This ceasefire is scheduled to occur over the upcoming Victory Day weekend in Russia. Although both Russia and Ukraine have previously declared different ceasefires on separate dates, the details surrounding the timeline remain somewhat ambiguous.
Ceasefire Details
According to President Trump, the ceasefire will halt all military activities from Saturday through Monday. Following his announcement, both Ukrainian and Russian representatives appeared to express their support for the terms laid out by the U.S. president. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump remarked on his request for the temporary cessation of hostilities, extending his thanks to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for their cooperation.
“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard-fought war,” Trump stated, referring to the conflict that has persisted for over four years. He indicated that negotiations are ongoing to resolve the conflict.
Having both sides agree to a peace deal is beneficial in negotiations, but only if no one violates it.
