The recent California gubernatorial debate saw Democratic candidate Katie Porter facing significant backlash for her comments about illegal immigration. During the debate, when asked about cooperation with federal authorities on deportations, Porter asserted that the role of the California governor is to protect all Californians, including those who are undocumented.
Porter’s Claims on Population Growth
Porter stated, “The sanctuary state policy is designed to ensure that our state resources, taxpayer funds and public servants, focus on their core responsibilities and not on federal immigration enforcement.” She further claimed that illegal immigrants contribute positively to California’s economy and are essential to the state’s population growth.
These remarks quickly gained traction on social media, particularly among conservative commentators. Gunther Eagleman, a prominent figure on social media, argued that Porter had revealed what some might call the “quiet part out loud” regarding immigration’s impact on California’s demographics.
Reactions from Political Opponents
Porter’s comments sparked reactions from various Republican figures. Many have long criticized Democrats for their stance on illegal immigration, arguing that it could be politically advantageous, particularly concerning congressional representation. Illegal immigrants are included in the Census count, which helps determine the distribution of House seats across states. Critics have pointed out that allowing this demographic to remain unregulated could ultimately influence the balance of political power.
A social media user pointedly remarked on Porter’s assertions, questioning whether she was insinuating that California has an excess of congressional seats due to its illegal immigrant population. Former President Donald Trump and others have sought to change the Census methodology to exclude non-citizens from these calculations.
Concerns About California’s Population Decline
The context of Porter’s comments becomes more striking when examining California’s recent demographic trends. Reports have indicated that between 2021 and 2023, approximately 400,000 illegal immigrants moved to California. While the state’s overall population grew slightly during this time, many residents have chosen to leave for various reasons, such as economic factors and high living costs.
In 2025, California reportedly experienced a net population loss of 215,542 due to domestic migration, contrasted with a net gain of 125,473 attributed to foreign migration. Fox News further reported that this trend raises concerns about the state’s economic stability, as migration outflows have been associated with substantial losses in tax revenue.
Tax Contributions and Critics’ Perspectives
Supporters of immigration policies that include illegal immigrants often cite their financial contributions, with estimates suggesting that undocumented residents paid approximately $8.5 billion in state and local taxes in 2022. However, conservative critics argue that the costs associated with public services, such as education and healthcare, outweigh these contributions.
Senator Mike Lee of Utah emphasized his discontent with Porter’s stance, arguing that promoting economic growth through illegal immigration is misguided. Studies have also suggested that increasing demand for housing, spurred by immigration, tends to raise living costs in already high-priced areas like California.
Katie Porter’s remarks during the California gubernatorial debate highlight the contentious issue of immigration policy in the state. As the gubernatorial primary approaches, these discussions will likely continue to evoke polarized responses from both Democratic and Republican voters. The implications of immigration on California’s population dynamics and economy remain a hotly debated topic as candidates position themselves ahead of the elections.
The undocumented population are an important factor in the cloward-piven strategy to bring about the collapse of capitalism and destruction of the Constitution.
I’d like to know how the state knows the amount of tax dollars that are contributed by illegals. They work primarily for cash. If using a SS number that’s stolen that is a federal offense. (Though Obama still doing it). What I’m still asking is. How did California become a santurary state? I would think it would have required at the very least a vote from the people?
