Looks like the Ilhan Omar apple didn’t fall far from the tree. The daughter, Isra Hirsi, 21, says she was pretty much evicted when she was suspended from Columbia University’s Bernard College after she was part of a pro-Palestine protest on the campus. Note, she was suspended, not expelled. There’s a difference.
The Hill reported that Hirsi was one of the 100+ students arrested and charged with trespassing for being part of the protests that pretty much no one cares about. They’re protesting Biden’s administrations response to the Israel-Hamas war, but like, they’re doing it at a college campus which makes zero sense. They should go to the White House and protest Joe Biden directly to his face if they want to get their message heard for real. But I guess it’s too far for them. I don’t know, your mom is a politician, surely she can send you money for a bus ticket to protest somewhere that makes more sense.
Anyway…. the college apparently cut off access to her food and housing and then allegedly put her stuff in a parking lot. I don’t know how much I believe that. If you’re suspended, that means you’ll be allowed back at some point. Did they really put her stuff out if she was only suspended? I would need to see proof of that before believing it. If you’re expelled, then that means your out for good. I don’t know how much of her story is true or not. The Hill reported on Hirsi’s response that was made during an interview with some lousy teen publication:
“At that moment, we made an announcement to the camp — because there were an overwhelming amount of Barnard students at camp — and let them know that we had been basically evicted and not allowed into our space, but also officially suspended,” she said.
…
“When I got to 1 Police Plaza, my roommates had brought me a bag of clothes because they knew that I was likely evicted,” she said. “We were reading our email and it said we had 15 minutes to go get our shit if we wanted it, and we’d have to go with a public safety escort.”
“I was like, ‘I’m not going to do that.’ But I was a little bit frantic, like, ‘Where am I going to sleep? Where am I gonna go?’” she continued. “And also all of my shit is thrown in a random lot. It’s pretty horrible.”
…
“I don’t know when I can go home, and I don’t know if I ever will be able to,” she said. “I haven’t formally been evicted. I haven’t been sent a ‘move out’ email, but they’ve just said that I can’t get in, whatever that means.”
Here’s a hint for all college students: stop protesting at colleges. Go to class, join clubs, go to parties, play sports, and have fun at college. If you want to protest, then hang out in front of the White House and do it. Makes more sense, right?
