Peace Is Holy, but Sometimes War Is Just
Beginning in 1096, Pope Urban II issued a call to arms at the Council of Clermont. The goal was to help the Byzantine Empire fight Turkish Muslims and recover Jerusalem and other holy Christian sites that were under Islamic control. The First Crusade resulted in the capture of Jerusalem in 1099.
