Texas A&M president resigns over DEI, gender backlash

The president of Texas A&M University, Mark Welsh, has resigned this week following criticism over his response to a student complaint about a professor’s gender-identity lessons in a children’s literature class.

The university’s Board of Regents announced his resignation on Thursday, effective Friday at 5 p.m.

Chancellor Glenn Hegar praised Welsh as a man of honor who led with dedication but noted that this is the right time for a change to ensure the university’s continued excellence.

The controversy began after a student’s viral video highlighted gender ideology lessons in the professor’s class. While the professor has since been fired, she is appealing the decision. Welsh also removed English Department leaders from their roles and initiated a comprehensive audit of university courses.
