Jay Jones, the Democratic nominee for Virginia attorney general, got in trouble for private text messages he sent in August 2022 that suggested violence against a Republican lawmaker and his family.
In a hypothetical scenario involving a choice between Adolf Hitler, Cambodian dictator Pol Pot, and then-Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert, Jones wrote that "Gilbert gets two bullets to the head".
When a Republican colleague, Delegate Carrie Coyner, objected to his language, Jones doubled down and suggested in a follow-up phone call and text message that it would take Gilbert's children dying for him to act on gun safety policy, adding that he believed Todd and his wife Jennifer were "breeding little fascists".
Jones also reportedly said he would "piss on" the graves of certain Republican delegates when they died.
These text messages were made public in October 2025 during his campaign for Attorney General, leading to widespread condemnation from both Republicans and Democrats, who called the comments "abhorrent" and "disqualifying". Jones has publicly apologized for the remarks, calling them a "grave mistake" and expressing deep shame.
