Singh was allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine and fentanyl when his semi-truck plowed into slow-moving traffic, resulting in three deaths and multiple injuries.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Singh entered the U.S. illegally in 2022. The crash sparked a political and social debate concerning immigration policies and commercial driver's licenses for non-citizens.
Singh pleaded not guilty to several charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of drugs. His public defender requested a Punjabi interpreter for a court appearance, revealing that Singh does not speak English fluently despite having obtained a commercial driver's license.
Following the incident, a debate arose among Sikh-Americans over calls for Sikh organizations not to help fund Singh's legal fees. A separate petition on Change.org demanded the return of his turban, which was reportedly removed by authorities.
