In a recent interview, Chelsea Handler said that she misses hosting late-night shows, and that she is ready to return, but that it has to be joyful, as everything is \u201cwhite and old and boring.\u201d<\/p>\n
As Handler is not interested in a traditional format for her show, she said that she is eying the Bill Maher model as a possibility.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be five nights a week. Ideally, it would be once a week. But it depends. Does anyone care about watching celebrities be interviewed over and over again every night? They care about the monologue,\u201d said Handler during the interview.<\/p>\n
She is thinking about how her show would be different, by saying: \u201cIt has to be joyful. Everything is white and old and boring.\u201d But before making these comments, she talked about a reboot of \u201cChelsea Lately\u201d that she would call \u201cChelsea Later,\u201d which she envisions as a more elevated version of the original, as reported on Yahoo<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cRather than just focus on gossip and Lindsay Lohan, it has to be a broader, wider spectrum of topics,\u201d said Handler.<\/p>\n Handler will guest host on \u201cThe Daily Show,\u201d in February, as she will be filling in for Trevor Noah, who announced his departure after seven years.<\/p>\n The long-tenured host of \u201cThe Tonight Show\u201d on NBC, Jimmy Fallon says that he can \u201cdefinitely see room for a female voice in late night comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt was Chelsea\u2019s choice to leave. She wanted to do other things. And she did. And she did them well. I think the audience is still there for her,\u201d said Fallon.<\/p>\n Fallon praised Handler even more as he calls her \u201ceffortlessly funny and honest\u201d and says \u201cshe is relatable, she is smart and she knows how to land a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAs a father of two intelligent, creative and curious girls, I think there should be more women in as many places as possible,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n And Handler cannot agree more with that, as she said: \u201cI need to get back in because where are the women? Every head of every network should be ashamed that they haven\u2019t given a female a talk show.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe fact that Samantha Bee is no longer on the air is unacceptable to me,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n Only Amber Ruffin (on Peacock) and Ziwe (on Showtime) helm their own shows among female hosts, after TBS canceled \u201cFull Frontal With Samantha Bee\u201d over the summer.<\/p>\n And Noah\u2019s \u201cDaily Show\u201d departure at Comedy Central is not the only departure that will happen soon, as James Corden is leaving his \u201cLate Late Show\u201d on CBS next year.<\/p>\n So Handler is aware that there\u2019s room for at least two new faces in late night shows.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t know if they\u2019ve reached out to us, but I\u2019ve had conversations with my team about both of those situations,\u201d said Handler.<\/p>\n \u201cJames Corden\u2019s show is like 12:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., so that doesn\u2019t really interest me. I definitely would be open to talking about the Trevor Noah slot. I don\u2019t know what their plans for it are, or if they\u2019ve already chosen somebody who\u2019s on the show,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n But she says that it \u201cdoesn\u2019t look optimistic,\u201d as she is looking at the late-night landscape.<\/p>\n \u201cTalk shows are a dying art, and there has to be a new iteration of them. They\u2019re not fresh. They\u2019re stale. I don\u2019t know what the answer is.
