Someone has allegedly attempted an assassination on Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico. News publications and viral videos circulated the web earlier today showing the news about what happened, but finally there’s a video that shows the man responsible. The man suspected of the assassination attempt has been identified as Slovak writer Juraj Cintula, 71, a liberal writer and activist who’s part of the Progressive Party in Slovakia.
Prime Minister Robert Fico was “shot multiple times and is in a life-threatening state” according to his Facebook page. He was taken to a hospital nearby because the situation was obviously urgent. Normally, he might be taken to a hospital in the capital, Bratislava, but that wasn’t possible considering he was shot several times. NBC News reported on the attempted assassination of PM Robert Fico:
At a news conference following the attack, Slovakia’s president, Zuzana Čaputová, said police arrested a suspect and would provide further information. “Until then, let us not pass quick judgments, please,” she said.
A TASR reporter said that several shots were fired in the town of Handlova, about 110 miles northeast of the capital Bratislava. Fico was greeting members of the public after a government meeting, the news agency reported. Čaputová confirmed the attack on Fico, 59, shortly after the news broke.
